Breastfeeding preparation course
The breastfeeding preparation course is another lecture offer of the Mělník Hospital for expectant mothers. The courses are led by experienced lactation consultants. The content is to prepare mothers for breastfeeding, to teach them how to care for their breasts during pregnancy and breastfeeding and breastfeeding technique. The courses, which consist of both theoretical and practical parts, are booked when women register at the Mělník maternity ward. Courses are free and last approximately 1.5 hours.
The content of the course is to get acquainted with the 10 steps to start breastfeeding successfully. Participants will learn about the importance of the first attachment to the breast and about skin-to-skin contact just after birth. The lactation counsellor will also explain the negative consequences of separation of mother and child. These days, it is now possible for the baby to be cared for by the father or another family member during the mother’s stay in the intensive care unit.
If mothers are interested, nurses will examine their breasts for the possibility of an injected nipple. They will also get all the available information on what they can do themselves to make breastfeeding successful. They will practice breastfeeding on dolls and also with an artificial breast. The counsellors will demonstrate how to massage the breasts and how to pump breast milk. The course includes an introduction to breastfeeding aids that women will learn to use, as well as a breastfeeding pillow.
